After last year, many are coming into 2021 skeptical and wary. I know several people who have avoided making the new year a big deal hoping to avoid jinxing anything. And I'll admit I've struggled making any new years resolutions the past couple of days.
2020 was a hard year not just physically, emotionally, or financially, but spiritually as well. Personally, I felt alone and even a bit forgotten when in-person meetings were postponed. I am the only active member of the Church in my family, so while several of my friends were still able to partake of the Sacrament each week with their families, I wasn't. I felt the loss of that great opportunity to partake of the Sacrament each week.
As the year progressed and meetings were postponed or shortened considerably, it slowly but surely became the new normal and I know I'm not the only one that has struggled to worship on Sundays the way I used to. I saw an article on the Church's homepage for the January 2021 Liahona. The address is called "Grow into the Principle of Revelation" and it was given by President Russel M. Nelson. Our 2021 study of the Doctrine and Covenants gives us an opportunity to "hear the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ". President Nelson gives us tips on how we can hear and receive the revelation that God gives us:
First, we immerse ourselves in the scriptures. " The Words of Christ 'tell [us] all things that [we] should do" (2 Nephi 32:3).
Next we pray " . . . we humble ourselves before God, find a quiet place . . . and pour out our hearts to Him."
Then we listen. "As we repeat this process, we will, in the words of the prophet Joseph Smith, "grow into the principle of revelation."
So I hope some of you have some new years goals in mind. But as a way to try and recover from last year, I'm going to try to recommit to more clearly and easily receive revelation from God again. I hope during 2021 we can continue to do our best as disciples of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
